What is Kiva?
Kiva is a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect people by building a lending community aimed at alleviating poverty, $25 at a time. Those who support Kiva and lend to individuals and groups in less developed countries around the world believe in the entrepreneurial spirit; they believe that safe and affordable access to capital through microfinance can help create better lives for entrepreneurs and their families around the world.
Most philanthropic organizations recruit donors to support their causes. Kiva.org is different in that users are not required to donate any money to Kiva to use their lending platform. Kiva works with microfinance institutions on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems.
What is microfinance?
Microfinance is the supply of loans and other basic financial services to less developed economies. With Kiva, one hundred percent of your loan is sent to these microfinance institutions, which Kiva calls Field Partners, who administer the loans in the field. With as little as $25, you can lend to a motivated individual across the globe and possibly change his or her life forever.
